ADDICTION

ADDICTION IS UNIVERSAL

Many years of personal "hands on" experience, as well as soul searching conversations with thousands of individuals, has brought home the inescapable fact that addiction is a universal human experience.  To some, that may not be new information but for most it is. And it is certainly disturbing to those who thought it was "the other guy" who needed help.

Almost everyone relates addiction to substance abuse, primarily drugs and alcohol. However, we have discovered that absolutely anything can be and is used in an addictive manner. By this we mean that a substance or behavior can become a "hiding place" or an excuse for avoiding introspection, for denying strong, disturbing feelings.

The dictionary's definition of addiction is "to give one's power over to", and we certainly do that--whether to alcohol, drugs, sports, work, leisure activities, sex, food, relationships, drama, chaos, or a host of other behaviors.  We try to avoid "getting real" about how we feel and what we fear.

ONE CAUSE, ONE SOLUTION

It has become crystal clear that one common denominator, a sense of unworthiness, fuels all the myriad addictive behaviors.  Our preferred substances and behaviors become the anesthesia that masks the pain that accompanies fear, hatred and a lack of self-worth.

When those feelings of fear or unworthiness are finally addressed, they are allowed to heal.  Thus, the addictive patterns evaporate automatically without force or trauma.

THE BOOK

Healing The Hurt Behind Addictions and Compulsive Behaviors delineates this process of healing in great detail.  It features the journey and insights of 28 people who have been released from their allegiance to a wide variety of behaviors and substances.

It also contains an edited transcript of a workshop by the same title that many have found very helpful, as the questions, objections, and experiences of the participants are those of so many.

This workshop is available on our "Healing the Hurt..." cassette tape set as well.

We offer this short message to you to plant the seed, to give you something to ponder, perhaps to push you to the edge of your understanding in order to go beyond it.
