What in the world does “Atonement” really mean??

Key Points

  1. Accepting Atonement is the single most important choice we can make for a happy, peaceful life.
  2. But do you know what it actually means?  It means repair, bringing closure, correction.
  3. Only we can facilitate that correction by changing our minds.

Well, we must directly address this much misunderstood word - Atonement.  We are told in ACIM that “The sole responsibility of the miracle worker is to accept the atonement for himself.”  Wow - the sole responsibility, the only responsibility, and we’re on the path to a healed and happy life?  Yes!  Sounds great, but if we have no idea what that means or how that acceptance occurs, then it might as well be written in Greek.  In simplest terms, it means we must trade in incorrect notions about ourselves for correct ones.  And with those correct ones in place and orchestrating the details of our lives, it’s an entirely new ballgame.  A very much better life!

It most certainly does not mean that someone else in some magical way makes your guilt disappear.  The notion of guilt is the sole concept that must be released entirely and who could possibly release those mistaken thoughts but you, yourself, since no one else can get inside your brain and take them away. So it would be wise to begin immediately changing your mind, releasing your grievances as your highest priority.  You’ll love the result!
